Missing connecting flight

In some cases you have to take multiple planes to reach your final destination.

If you miss a connecting flight and arrive at your final destination with a delay of more than 3 hours, you are entitled to flight compensation¹. The amount of compensation is calculated based on the duration of the delay and the distance to the final destination.

You are entitled to compensation if:

    • the tickets were purchased as part of a single booking and
    • EU air passenger rights apply² and
    • the late arrival was not caused by extraordinary circumstances

You are not entitled to compensation if you miss your connecting flight due to delays at security checks or if you have not respected the boarding time for the flight at the transfer airport.

Flight compensation¹

Compensation – delayed arrival

Amount in EURODistanceDelay at final destination
250 €Up to 1,500 kmAt least 3 hours
400 €Over 1,500 km within the EU and all other flights between 1,500 and 3,500 kmAt least 3 hours
600 €Over 3,500 kmAt least 3 hours
  • You are entitled to compensation if the delay is not caused by extraordinary circumstances and reach your final destination with a delay of at least 3 hours.
  • If you miss your connecting flight when travelling within or outside the EU on a plane departing from an EU country, you should be entitled to compensation, provided you reach your final destination by a delay of over 3 hours. It does not matter whether the connecting flight is operated by a company from within or outside the EU.
  • If you depart from a non-EU country to your final destination in the EU, with connecting flights operated successively by non-EU and EU companies or only by EU companies, only flights operated by EU companies are taken into account for determining the right to compensation in the event of a long delay in arriving at the final destination.
  • You are not entitled to compensation if you miss your connecting flight due to delays at security checks or if you missed the boarding time for flight to the transfer airport.
  • If you accept a flight to a different airport than the one listed on your original booking and you arrive late, you have the right to flight compensation. The time used to calculate the delay is the arrival time at the airport mentioned in the original booking or at the destination agreed upon with the operator. Transportation costs between alternative airport and the one mentioned in initial reservation or the destination you have agreed upon must be borne by the airline.

If the airline offered you the option of rerouting and arrive at your final destination late, compensation may be reduced by 50%, as shown in the table below.

Compensation in case of flight rerouting

EU air passenger rights²

EU air passenger rights apply:

  • If the flight is carried out within the EU (regardless of whether it is operated by an EU or non-EU company)
  • If you land at an EU airport coming from outside the Union and the flight is operated by an EU company
  • If you are taking off from an EU airport to a country outside the Union, regardless of whether the flight is operated by an EU or non-EU company
  • If you have not already received certain compensation (compensation, rerouting, airline assistance) for flight-related issues under the relevant legislation of a non-EU country.
